THEATRE AND PERFORMING ARTS

Theatre for many people conjures up images of the bright lights of Broadway. However, for most playwrights, composers and lyricists, the real activity takes place at the many local and regional theatres, both commercial and nonprofit, throughout the country. Development and production of most new works begins in these venues, sometimes as a result of commissions by the theatres, and sometimes through offers made for already completed works. Staging live performances or creating works to be performed before a live audience can be a challenging endeavor. In addition to negotiating compensation and performance dates and contracting for space and talent, it will often be necessary to secure clearances to use music or other existing works. Producers, playwrights and other performers need to resolve business and legal issues in the early stages of a project, so that they will be free to concentrate on the creation and production of the work.
